Let me introduce you to South Korea’s finest super-market snack: Choco Pie.

Choco Pies are palm-sized, marshmallow-stuffed, and chocolate-coated pies that have dominated virtually all supermarkets in South Korea for more than 40 years.

These are widely popular in South Korea, serving as a memory-stones for older generations of the 70’s and 80’s while also bringing joy to the younger generations of today.

The thing is, these aren’t just popular in South Korea. They’re insanely popular in North Korea too.

But because the North Korean government is fiercely anti-South, Kim Jong Un and his regime officially banned Choco Pies in North Korea as ‘evil’ contraband from the ‘corrupt’ and ‘sinister’ South.

As if North Korean citizens’ lives weren’t miserable enough, the Kim Regime felt the need to take away even the most innocent of snacks and confectioneries, for no other reason than the fact that those snacks are products of the South.

What happens next, though, is truly amazing.

Upon hearing this news of the ban, hundreds of South Koreans and North Korean defectors gathered up at the South Korean side of the border to do something incredible: pack thousands of Choco Pies in plastic balloons and release them into North Korea.

Some other items packed in these giant balloons were movies, DVD players, and pictures of the outside world.

Of course, it’s extremely unlikely that even half of these balloons were actually received by someone. Only a few of these balloons probably made it into North Korean villages to be received by North Korean citizens.

The whole idea is pretty crazy and weird, if you think about it.

Regardless, I think it’s incredibly heart-warming that there are still people who actually care about the people who are suffering in North Korea. To me, this is proof that humanity indeed hasn’t lost all hope yet.
