Is it illegal to not answer your front door if a police officer knocks?

Hell the fuck no. I was 5150’d not too long ago and the LAST thing u EVER do is open the door when police come a-pounding. As soon as u crack the door they can use “probable cause” for anything they feel is “suspicious” and now you’re getting thrown to the ground and taking a free ride to central booking for whatever they’ve come a-knocking in the 1st place.

Best thing is to just be quiet and wait till they go bye bye. If they have a warrant your door’s getting bashed in anyway, so don’t set yourself up for failure.

Finally, if you’re that curious about what they want, talk to them through the door or intercom. But never evereverever open that fucking door 1st.

Ok, so the douchebag, pretentious, assuming a$$holes have caused me to kill comments on here, sorry guys i had thought i was giving a simple answer to a simple question but all these accusations of being a shady individual or even a blatant criminal are triggering me in all the wrong ways.

I’m a f@#king federal employee morons, i can’t have a criminal record of any kind and have clearance for my position.

Too many fu#$tards assuming and/or not reading the whole post have ruined a pretty damn good turnout of people sharing their own experiences with cops taking their authority too far.

I have friends that are law enforcement and my male ancestors were all US military as far back pre ww1 when they 1st emigrated to the United States from Germany and Ireland.

Like I’ve stated to several prior posts, most law enforcement officers really are trying to do their best to protect and serve, unfortunately some bad apples spoil the bunch. But they have an UNBELIEVABLY difficult job, with ungodly stress daily, and domestic calls are where cops get injured and/or killed far more than any other type of emergency they are called for.

They never know who’s really behind that door when they do knock and shit can go sideways at lightning speed on these calls, ESPECIALLY domestic violence situations. So i don’t envy them and i don’t ever want to be in their shoes, but i do respect 99.9% of law enforcement.

But that being said….IMO, hwy patrol, bike cops, and fucking rookies tend to be c#$ksucking, power trippin, tyrants and it’s important to know how to protect yourself from getting caught up in their bullshit and that’s motherfuckin 💯💥

This was a simple answer to a simple question.

All these Karen’s and fu#$tards talking about “well what about missing children” or “you MUST Be a criminal then” but ESPECIALLY “I feel sorry for your country because in mine blah blah blah” can go f@$k yourselves with the bbc wooden dildo your mother uses nighty. I believe it has splinters cuz she’s all dried up and she’s too poor to afford any lube. She spit on it plenty, so i believe it’s now ready for your rectum.

The opposite. My brother is currently in Texas Department of Public Safety. He’s a state trooper, and I actually asked him this same question.

He’s told me already and after doing my own research on this. No. It isn’t illegal. Unless they have a search or arrest warrant, and it’s a valid warrant then no. You don’t need to answer the door.

I just want to say. The question was about whether or not it is illegal to not answer the door. Not if you should or should not answer the door.

Personally, I would have still asked the police on what they need and what, I can help them with. Not every cop is bad, but it doesn’t mean every person dressed as a cop is a cop. If they want me to open the door, they need to provide a valid reason why.

I am not opening the door just because they said so because I am under no obligation to do so. If they say they have a warrant, I’ll ask them to slip it under the door so I can check it myself and validate their claim.

If it is a search warrant then, I am looking specifically for what they instead to search and what they are looking for, as well as the names and dates. The police can only search for what is in the search warrant so, I am finding someone else to be a witness to the search and I am making sure that they search only what is listed on the warrant.

If it is an arrest warrant then, I’ll comply. It is better to fight it in court than on the streets if there is any issues.

My a-hole sister called the cops on me after she wanted to verify that my loving, beautiful husband had died a few hours prior to her call. Obviously, I was upset, and was devastated bc I did CPR on him until the ambulance came, but could not save him.

When the 2 cops showed up at the house, I assumed incorrectly they were just there to offer condolences, or give me official notification of my husband’s death. I normally would not have opened the door, but was still in a state of shock.

Then the 2 cops (half of my town’s police force) donned nitrile gloves, and told me “for my own safety” they were taking me to a mental facility. I argued my rights, and asked politely why they though I was a danger to myself, and they told me that I had said I was going to commit suicide.

I certainly never said that, and I kept backing away from them, asking for their proof or a warrant. Finally, one of the cops called the station, and asked for verification that I said that. With a disappointed look on his face, there was no proof I said it, and they could not involuntarily take me.

I told them “why are you harrassing a widow, when there’s actual crime going on?” I told them nicely to leave my property immediately. Once outside, they told me if I needed help with anything, just let them know. I gestered to the three heavy, stinky full cans of garbage in the driveway.

I said, I really COULD use your help getting these to the curb because I can’t lift them. So, the cops came illegally to try and take me away, but instead took that stinky garbage to the curb. (A long walk) Their uniforms were messed up.

I’ve been a police officer for 20 years. Here are some of the reasons I’ve knocked on someone’s door.

  1. Because they’ve called the police
  2. Because someone has called the police on them and now I have to figure out why.
  3. To ask for their help, such as have you seen this missing child or did you see anything suspicious related to the crime that happened across the street.
  4. To arrest someone.
  5. To execute a search warrant
  6. To interview someone
  7. To notify someone about the death of a relative.
  8. To say “are you ok? Someone called and was concerned because they haven’t heard from you.”

Bottom line there are many reasons that police knock on your door. Answer the door or don’t. Be paranoid or don’t. Help your fellow citizens or don’t. It’s entirely up to you. It’s not illegal, sometimes it’s just impolite.

As a side note I have neighbors that knock on my door all the time. I’m someone’s neighbor too.

Have a great day.

No in fact that’s what you should do in that situation. Under no circumstances are you required to speak with the police. If they really want to search your home, they can get a warrant for that.

In the event they have a warrant, all they do is present it and they’re coming in your home with or without your consent. Absent a warrant, they actually can’t come into your house unless you let them in.

Remember in the event they come to your home without a warrant and you let them in, you’ve just waived your fourth amendment rights. They can then search your home, because they’ve got your consent.
